Festival humour pour la Paix / DeAnne Smith

DeAnne Smith, a three-time Canadian Comedy Award nominee has performed all over the world, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Iceland Comedy Festival or Just for Laughs Montreal and Chicago... It is difficult not to love this Canadian comedy champion. She is warm, easily fascinated, and has an adorable "did I just say that?" reaction after some of her racier punchlines. Smith's show is a surprisingly perky exploration of comedy's role in a world consumed by intolerance and uncertainty. It wanders through questions on identity and the interstices of gender in society, but in a way that is packed with brash commentary, clever wordplay, and pretention-free enthusiasm. By her own admission, DeAnne might just be the worst gender-queer, lesbian, tortured slam-poet, hipster vegan in the world. And today she is inclined to push the more caustic bad-taste moments to even sharper levels of pearl-clutching shock, while preserving the sophistication and intelligence we've come to expect from her. It's the fact that Smith even manages to negotiate topics such as American politics with such unexpected creativity that stands her apart from other comedian's trawling the murky depths of the geopolitical zeitgeist for material. This success hangs on the flexibility of Smith's execution, which leaps effortlessly from one-liner to story comedy, observational humour to improv crowd patter, and even some 21st century, hashtag-generation prop comedy. It's a virtuoso display of smart, slick, silly brilliance. Organization: neimënster
