Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui & GöteborgsOperans Danskompani

WITH 18 DANCERS Meet the artistic team after the second performance.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is one of a handful of artists that have featured consistently in the programme of the Théâtres de la Ville over the past decade, and this season is no exception. Dancers from his company Eastman join forces with the contemporary dance company of the Göteborg Opera to bring us a breathtaking new creation.

In Icon , Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui sets out to investigate how we make icons and how, at some point, we give them power and then have a tendency to break them. Known for blending different art forms, cultures and traditions into a coherent whole, Larbi collaborated once again with renowned artist Antony Gormley, widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space.

It is through an artistic exchange with Gormley that clay came into the piece. 3.5 tonnes of it! "Clay never settles and keeps on having the potential to transform, and in that sense, clay is very close to the body of a dancer", says Larbi Cherkaoui. The performers interact with the clay in sophisticated, suggestively ritual patterns; the experience is steeped in both mysticism and naturalism.

The 18-strong troupe from the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani dance to specially composed music, performed live by musicians and singers from Italy and Japan.
