WOJTEK BLECHARZ CYCLE CONTEMPORAIN
PART OF RAINY DAYS 2017 - HOW DOES IT FEEL?
After Transcryptum commissioned by Grand Theater National Opera in Warsaw (2013) and Park-Opera commissioned by Theater Powszechny in Warsaw (2016), Body-Opera is the third opera-installation composed and directed by Blecharz, which challenges the habits and perception of a listener/viewer, and places the audience in a new performance situation. In Transcryptum the audience was exploring the off stage spaces of the opera house, trying to understand the chaotic nature of a traumatic memory. In Park-Opera the participants are supposed to discover different "acts" of the opera, which are located at various spots of one of Warsaw's parks. Body-Opera addresses the issue of how music institutions are limiting our perception by cultivating the same models of experiencing music based on sitting, listening and watching. Perception is embodied; we do not experience music as an abstract intellectual process through our brains, ears and eyes only. Sound is a frequency, a vibration, and a very dynamic material, which can touch our senses or emotions as well as the bodies. Body-Opera is dedicated to the audience; it explores relationships between the human body and the sound and reminds the participant about the physical nature of the main element of music.
