ITI-Lëtzebuerg
Luxembourgian Centre of the International Theatre Institut

The THEATER FEDERATIOUN is also the Luxembourgish Centre of the International Theatre Institute. The International Theatre Institute (ITI) is a non-governemental organization which was officially inaugurated by the UNESCO and a group of international theatre experts in 1948. It is the largest international network in the field of performing arts. The purpose of the ITI is to promote international exchange of knowledge and practice in theatre arts, in order to consolidate peace and friendship between peoples, to deepen mutual understanding and increase creative co-operation between all people in the theatre arts. Its activities are carried out by its more than 90 national centres spread all over the world.

Whereas the ITI operates essentially on an international level, the national centres work in both a national and international environment. Their national mission consists in the support of the performing arts and the promotion of the dialogue with the local audience and public. Since 1961, the 27th of march is the “World Theatre Day”, which is the occasion for the ITI and its members to organize, all over the world, festivities in honour of the theatre. The various national centres arrange festivals, meetings, lectures and open days and thus make it possible for the broad public to explore the theatre.

The ITI-Lëtzebuerg consideres as its main task to stimulate a critical exchange of ideas on the topics of theatre and cultural policy in Luxembourg. Doing this, it works together with persons representing various professions in touch with theatre.

On the international level, the Luxembourgish Centre of the ITI is a member of two of the ITI’s various groups:
- the “New Project Group”, which promotes alternative and multidisciplinary forms of theatre and stages co-productions rehearsed by an international team;
- the international dance committee wich aims at promoting studies and practices of dance. For this it supports international festivals and competitions, organizes worshops for young dancers and events in touch with the International Dance Day, on April 29th.
